Things to Do in Puerto Plata in One Day: A Cruise Stop Guide

When our Virgin Voyages cruise made a stop at the Puerto Plata cruise port, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. But after spending the day exploring this vibrant coastal city in the Dominican Republic, I can confidently say—Puerto Plata is full of charm, culture, and fun that you can absolutely enjoy in just one day.
Whether you’re a beach lover, history buff, or adventure seeker, there are plenty of memorable things to do in Puerto Plata when you’re visiting by cruise. Here’s how we made the most of our short time in port—and why I’d happily return for a longer stay.
About Puerto Plata
Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata (also known as San Felipe de Puerto Plata) is a stunning city surrounded by lush mountains and gorgeous coastline. Known for its colonial charm, rich history, and warm hospitality, it’s become an increasingly popular stop for Caribbean cruises.
The Puerto Plata cruise port, also known as Taino Bay, is one of the newest and most well-developed ports in the region. The area around the port is safe, walkable, and filled with activities, shops, and restaurants—making it easy to explore even if you don’t book an excursion.

Weather for Puerto Plata
Before we dive into activities, a quick note about the weather for Puerto Plata: it’s typically tropical year-round. Expect daytime highs in the 80s to 90s°F (27–33°C) with high humidity. If you’re cruising during summer or hurricane season, pack light breathable clothing, sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
1. Explore the Port Area – Taino Bay
Right off the ship, the Puerto Plata cruise port at Taino Bay offers a range of things to do without even leaving the terminal. We walked through the beautifully designed port village, complete with:
- Beach-style loungers and a mini waterpark
- Shopping for souvenirs and local crafts
- Bars with rum tastings and tropical cocktails
- A replica of a Spanish fort and pirate-themed photo ops
If you prefer to stay close to the ship, you can easily spend 2–3 hours enjoying the port area.

2. Take a Cable Car Ride to Mount Isabel de Torres
One of the top things to do in Puerto Plata is taking the teleférico (cable car) to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres. The views of the coastline and city below are absolutely breathtaking.
At the top, there’s a smaller version of Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue, along with botanical gardens and shaded walking paths. We booked this as a shore excursion through Virgin Voyages, and it was the perfect mix of sightseeing and relaxing.
3. Stroll Through the Historic Center
If you want to soak up some culture and local flavor, head into the city center—just a short ride or guided tour from the port. In Puerto Plata Dominican Republic, the historic area is filled with pastel-colored Victorian buildings, friendly locals, and interesting museums like:
- Amber Museum – Learn about the region’s famous amber and see fossils up close
- Central Park (Parque Central) – A lovely place to sit, relax, and people-watch
- San Felipe Fortress – A 16th-century fort right on the water that’s great for photos and learning some history
It’s an easy way to experience the heart of the city in under 2 hours. And don’t miss the two most Instagram-worthy streets: Umbrella Street and Pink Street. Umbrella Street features a canopy of colorful umbrellas suspended overhead, creating a vibrant walkway that’s perfect for fun travel photos. Just around the corner, Pink Street is exactly what it sounds like—a bold pink alleyway complete with matching benches, lamp posts, and doorways. Both are easy to access on foot and add a playful, photo-ready moment to your day in the city.

4. Relax on Puerto Plata Beaches
You can’t visit the Caribbean without spending time by the ocean! While the Puerto Plata beach right near the cruise terminal is small, it’s still a peaceful place to kick back.
However, we opted for a quick taxi ride to Playa Dorada, one of the most well-known Puerto Plata beaches. It’s perfect for a swim, a beachside cocktail, or just soaking up the sun.
Other nearby options for a longer stay include Sosúa Beach or Cabarete Beach. Both are within an hour’s drive and known for water sports and beach bars.
5. Taste the Local Flavors
We didn’t leave Puerto Plata without trying some Dominican cuisine! Whether you dine at a beach bar or in the port village, here are a few must-try local dishes:
- Mangu – Mashed plantains served with eggs and fried cheese
- Tostones – Fried green plantains
- Mofongo – A garlicky mashed plantain dish with meat or seafood
- Fresh tropical fruit juice or local Dominican rum
Foodies will want to schedule some time for lunch in town or back at the port before returning to the ship.

Bonus: Book a Day Pass at a Resort
If relaxing poolside is your thing, consider booking a day pass at one of the best resorts in Puerto Plata. Some all inclusives allow cruise passengers to spend the day enjoying their pools, beaches, and buffets for a flat rate.
Popular options include:
- Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort Puerto Plata – Great for families or couples looking for all-inclusive fun
- Iberostar Costa Dorada – Known for its gorgeous beachfront and lush landscaping
- Viva Wyndham V Heavens – An adult-only escape near Playa Dorada
If you’re planning a return trip, these are some of the best resorts in Puerto Plata to consider for a longer stay.

Final Thoughts
Even though we only had a few hours at the Puerto Plata Dominican Republic cruise port, we were amazed at how much we could see and do. It quickly became one of our favorite stops on our Virgin Voyages cruise.
Whether you stay near Taino Bay or venture out to explore more of the Dominican Republic Puerto Plata has to offer, you’ll be glad you made the most of your port day.
