Things to Do in Paris: The Best Attractions, Neighborhoods, Shopping, Museums, and Local Experiences

Paris is one of those cities I can visit again and again and still discover something new every time. Of course, there are the iconic landmarks everyone dreams about seeing, like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Arc de Triomphe. But after multiple trips to Paris, I’ve realized the magic of the city is really about the mix of experiences. It’s wandering through charming neighborhoods, sitting at cafés for hours, finding hidden museums, watching the sunset along the Seine, and slowing down enough to enjoy the atmosphere.

On my recent trips to Paris, I explored both the famous attractions and some experiences that felt more local. I visited Disneyland Paris during Christmas season, explored the holiday market at the Tuileries Garden, wandered through Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, finally toured the stunning Palais Garnier, visited the peaceful Grand Mosque of Paris, spent time at smaller museums like Petit Palais, and experienced some of my favorite Paris moments simply sitting along the Seine at sunset.

At night, the Eiffel Tower sparkles every hour, and watching it from along the Seine feels incredibly Parisian.

Experience the Best Shopping in Paris

One of the best things to do in Paris is simply shopping and wandering through the city’s beautiful neighborhoods.

Galeries Lafayette

Galeries Lafayette Haussmann is worth visiting even if you do not plan to buy anything. The stained-glass dome inside is stunning, and the rooftop terrace has one of the best free views in Paris.

Le Marais

If you want shopping that feels trendier and more local, head to Le Marais. This neighborhood is filled with:

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Visit the Louvre

The Louvre Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world and absolutely one of the must see things in Paris. Most visitors come for the Mona Lisa, but the museum itself is incredible. The architecture, sculptures, paintings, and historic collections could easily fill an entire day.

Explore the Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Élysées

The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most iconic landmarks in Paris and offers one of the best panoramic city views. From there, you can walk down the famous Champs-Élysées, one of the most well-known shopping streets in the world. The avenue is lined with luxury boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and flagship stores. Nearby Avenue Montaigne and Rue Saint-Honoré are especially known for designer shopping including Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès.

Visit Musée d’Orsay

If you love Impressionist art, Musée d'Orsay is a must. Located inside a former train station, the museum feels more manageable than the Louvre while still housing masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Degas.

Explore Petit Palais

Petit Palais became one of my favorite museums in Paris. It’s one of the best free things to do in Paris and feels far less crowded than larger museums. I especially loved the peaceful courtyard garden and café. During my visit, I discovered Monet’s “Sunset on the Seine,” which quickly became one of my favorite paintings I’ve seen in Paris.

Tour Palais Garnier

The Palais Garnier may honestly be the most beautiful interior I’ve seen in Paris. I somehow missed it on previous trips, but after finally visiting, I would now consider it one of the best things to see in Paris. The gold details, chandeliers, staircase, and painted ceilings are breathtaking. I highly recommend arriving right when it opens.

Visit Sacré-Cœur and Montmartre

Sacré-Cœur Basilica offers one of the best views in Paris. The surrounding Montmartre neighborhood feels like a charming village filled with artists, cafés, bakeries, and winding streets. One of my favorite travel tips is using the Montmartre funicular tram so you do not have to walk all the stairs up the hill.

Visit the Grand Mosque of Paris

One of the most peaceful places I visited on my recent trip was Grande Mosquée de Paris. I visited in late April during the tail end of wisteria season, and the entire space felt serene and beautiful. The tilework, courtyards, gardens, and tea room make it feel like a hidden escape from the city.

Explore Le Marais

Le Marais is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Paris because it blends history, shopping, cafés, galleries, and local energy. This is one of the best areas for non touristy things to do in Paris because it feels more relaxed and residential while still having plenty to explore.

Stroll Through Paris’s Most Beautiful Gardens

No trip to Paris is complete without spending time in its iconic gardens. The Tuileries Garden sits between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, making it the perfect place to take a break between sightseeing. I loved wandering the tree-lined paths, admiring the fountains and sculptures, and grabbing a seat by the water to soak in the atmosphere.

For a quieter escape, head to the Luxembourg Gardens on the Left Bank. These beautifully manicured gardens surround the historic Luxembourg Palace and feel like a favorite gathering spot for locals. Whether you're enjoying the colorful flower beds, watching children sail toy boats in the fountain, or simply relaxing with a coffee, it's one of the most peaceful and picturesque places in Paris.

Both gardens offer a chance to slow down and enjoy the beauty of everyday Parisian life.

Wander Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is classic Paris. Think sidewalk cafés, bookstores, pastries, boutiques, and beautiful streets. This is one of the best neighborhoods for slowing down and enjoying Paris like a local.

Explore the Latin Quarter

The Latin Quarter is lively, historic, and full of personality. Between bookstores, cafés, student life, and winding streets, it’s one of the most interesting things to do in Paris if you enjoy simply wandering.

Visit Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle

Notre-Dame de Paris remains one of the city’s most important landmarks. Nearby Sainte-Chapelle is famous for its stunning stained-glass windows and is absolutely worth visiting.

Relax Along the Seine at Sunset

One of my favorite local-feeling Paris experiences is sitting along the Seine River at sunset. Locals gather with friends, music, wine, and snacks while watching the city transition into evening. Honestly, some of my favorite Paris memories have happened here rather than at major tourist attractions.

Take a Seine River Cruise

A Seine River cruise is touristy, but it is still one of the best things to do in Paris with kids, teens, or first-time visitors. Seeing the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Notre-Dame from the water gives you a completely different perspective of the city.

Visit Disneyland Paris

If you’re traveling as a family, Disneyland Paris is such a fun experience. We visited during Christmas season, and the decorations made it feel especially magical. If you visit during the holidays, the Christmas market at the Tuileries Garden is one of the most fun things to do in Paris France. The lights, food stalls, rides, shopping, and festive atmosphere make it feel magical for both adults and kids.

One of my favorite recent experiences was a day trip to Giverny and visiting Claude Monet's House and Gardens. Walking through Monet’s gardens in spring felt like stepping into one of his paintings. If you have extra time, this is one of the best day trips from Paris.

Palace of Versailles is one of the most popular day trips from Paris and absolutely worth visiting. The Hall of Mirrors, palace interiors, and gardens are stunning.
