We recently spent a week in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and chose Marquette as our home base. Staying at a lakeside rental just outside of town gave us easy access to all the best things to do in Marquette, Michigan—from outdoor adventures to delicious local treats. We drove the loop around the island (Peter White Drive), which is closed to traffic at times to allow walkers and bikers to enjoy it safely.

Housed in a beautiful old building with wooden floors and charming decor, Donckers offers a full “soda fountain and confectionery experience” alongside house-made chocolates, caramels, and other nostalgic treats Locals rave about the ambiance and quality—visitors often stay for lunch or dinner and then indulge in dessert from the classic counter. Whether you’re craving creamy fudge, artisan sweets, or just want to soak in the retro atmosphere, Donckers is a delicious must-visit in downtown Marquette.

We especially loved dining at The Vierling, a historic restaurant with craft beer and Lake Superior whitefish, and browsing the shelves at Snowbound Books.
