The Power of Flower Inspiration – Part One

The other day, I decided to walk to the CAMP, which is a funky, “hipster”- friendly, little outdoor mall near my house.  As I was walking through my neighborhood, I noticed gorgeous flowers in practically every direction.  I often notice trees, flowers, insects and nature in general.

Maybe it’s my Midwestern roots, spending summers on Lake Superior, or the memory of the sheer excitement conjured when spring finally arrived in my hometown, rightfully called the ‘frozen tundra’. Nature has always had a calming affect on me.  And the older I get, the more I’m learning to appreciate the little things and finding inspiration in unexpected places.

So even in my urban neighborhood, in the midst of all the concrete and strip malls, I noticed these lovely flowers. This yellow flower struck me with its vibrance. It inspired me to create fun summer looks, incorporating the bright yellow, warming orange and refreshing green, just perfect for summer.

I designed this look with the idea that it could go from work to happy hour. My office environment is casual enough where a crisp pair of jeans is almost always appropriate.  White jeans feel fresh in summer, and this straight-leg version is almost universally flattering on most women. The simple silky orange blouse can be paired with this denim blazer.  I love this blazer because it is an updated version of a classic, with the zipper detail at the waist and a slight peplum for some visual interest.  I chose a bolder earring to draw attention to the face, and a subtle long necklace to break up the monotony of the plain blouse.   I chose a color-blocked tote, perfect for work, and a bold clutch for evening.  The shoes have a subtle floral print that are sexy enough for a night out, but practical enough for daytime.

White Jeans Tips. 1) look for a thick enough material so they are not see-through; 2)wear the right underwear so there are no VPL (visible panty lines); and 3) make sure they have some give in them, either buy a size up or choose a pair with some stretch to the material—tight white pants show every lump and bump.

The Look. Clockwise from top left: (1) earrings; (2) blouse; (3) necklace; (4) jacket; (5) tote; (6) pants; (7) shoes; (8) clutch.

The Flower. ‘Cleopatra’ Canna Lily.
